The Environment Agency’s Permit to Discharge, whether an exemption or a standard or bespoke permit requires all permit holders to ensure that their sewage treatment system be ‘operated and maintained in accordance with a maintenance plan as specified within the manufactures maintenance instruction’ (Section 2.2.6 –schedule of exempt operations).
This ensures that, ‘the discharge must not cause pollution to ground or surface water (Section 2.2.10 –schedule of exempt operations)’.
Copies of activities relating to the maintenance of the system should be kept for a minimum of five years. A legible report of all such actions can be requested by the Environment Agency at any given time. This includes yearly maintenance visits, problems and actions taken (i.e. air blower failure and replacement) and the regular emptying of the tankage as detailed by a licensed waste disposal company receipt.
WCI offers an annual service contract on all sewage treatment plants that we, WCI Sewage Treatment Ltd, install. The cost starts from as little as £95 per year, depending on the size of the application.
This entitles you to one scheduled visit per year during which we check the operation of the treatment system, change air blower filters, advice on desludging and test the treatment quality achieved to be sure that you are meeting your EA obligations.
Under a service contract, should any problem arise between visits, one of our British Water certified service engineers would offer advice and come to site if deemed necessary, at no additional cost. Replacement parts are charged at the listed prices, less 5%.
